Surface

Art gallery Vroom&Varossieau in Amsterdam presented an exhibition of Danish photographer Søren Solkær, titled 'SURFACE'.

'SURFACE' is a portrait anthology of some of the most significant street artists on the contemporary scene as well as the pioneering icons across the globe. The exhibition took place from 9 September to 9 October 2016.

After two decades of mainly portraying the world’s leading musicians, Søren Solkær (1969) set out to do a large scale portrait project about individuals who create art in the public space. 'SURFACE' is the result of a three-year journey photographing in Athens, Berlin, Copenhagen, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Miami, New York, Paris, Stavanger and Sydney.

'SURFACE' has been created in Søren’s signature style drawing influence from cinema and painting. His use of artificial lighting on location and a strong element of storytelling, creates images with an atmosphere of hyperrealism – a sort of imaginary film stills. Each artist is portrayed with his or her own art work, often using masks or props to obscure the identity of the artists.

'This monograph is Søren Solkær’s fourth publication. It is a 240-page hardcover fine art photography book featuring portraits of 135 street artists. The expansive collection includes Shepard Fairey, Blek le Rat, DabsMyla, DOES, Ron English, FAILE, Kaff-eine, The London Police, Niels Shoe Meulman, Seen, Swoon and Vhils amongst many.

Søren Solkær photographed DOES during his stay in Melbourne for his solo exhibition 'Between The Lines' in 2013. The portrait was taken in front of a signature DOES mural in Sniders Lane, Melbourne Australia.
